Neelakurinji is the main attractive feature about the region is the kurinji bush. The gleaming purplish blue color of its flowers lure nature lovers Neelakurinji will Blossom in Munnar in the Western Ghats awaits another blossoming of ‘Neelakurinji’ ( Strobilanthes kunthiana) in 2018, in splendour with the purple-blue colour of Neelakurinji.
Neelakurinji will blooms once in 12 years, but there are many sub-species whose flowering period range from a year to 16 years. Of the 200 species of Strobilanthes found in Asia, Munnar alone hosts 45 species and the last blossoming was reported in September 2014 in Munnar.
